Art Archive 11- Halloween

One from the archive...  I did this shirt for Bush Gardens in 2002 for Halloween.  This was way before I switched to doing all vector art.  This week at RIT, Ill be doing a PSD airbrush demo.  Maybe Ill do a halloween theme.  Iv never done a Thanksgiving shirt so all the turkey posts next month will have to come from the sketchbook.  Until then its Happy Halloween.

Art Archive 7: Patterns

I was waiting to put up some patterns until I found  one in particular that I really liked.  I keep most of my art in easy to find folders bu since I don't show patterns, Iv only started to keep them handy.  I had to dig around the archive to find the NFL lifestyle pattern I wanted to show.  It went into jacket liners and sewn into garments and printed and so on.  For a meeting to present the line, they made it into this kind of mantel piece thing to help generate excitement.  This one is for the NFC West and they made them for all the conferences and divisions, each with a different stripe color; blue, black orange, etc.

Like the Bengal's number system, fonts must be customized to fit with the design direction of the uniform, or collection, or graphic.  Here are some more numbers and a font for a different project.

 

Art Archive 6: Numbers

As I am going through and gathering some patterns to post here, something you would never see on my portfolio site, at least not yet, I came across this number system I did for Reebok for the Cincinnati Bengals.  This took well over two months of development to create a number font that would suit the new uniforms that were coming out.

I really enjoy patterns but only do them for Reebok and Adidas.  Probably because I just don't advertise it.  Very soon Ill put up a project I did last year that's coming out in stores in the fall.  I haven't seen the prototype yet but I hear it came out pretty well.

Art Archive 5: The Helmet Shirt

Every year NFL vendors put out their helmet shirt.  At Nutmeg, this was a big deal.  It was always a challenge to keep it fresh and get it to print the best it could.  We put ours up to New Buffalo Shirt Factory and Gardner Graphics for quality because they always did such a great job.  When I left Nutmeg, I went to Gardner's but as I said before, I was mostly designer so I didn't paint any like I did at Nutmeg.

This leads up to this Packers helmet.  To me, the helmet shirt was huge.  It was a test of quality and I really admired the way some people pulled it off.  I did this one primarily in Illustrator with some shading in Photoshop for Reebok around 2002.  The story on it is way, way longer but to keep it short, the shirt came out right on.  It printed just like you see it.  I did the separations myself for 12 colors.  It hangs in my studio, framed with the seps on the side along with it.  

Art Archive 4 : It's All in the Timing

I just got in contact with a friend I used to work for who moved on to Universal Studios.  I haven't talked to him in a few years (thanks LinkedIn) and I got to thinking of back then when I first started freelancing full time.  We were working on entertainment graphics for theme parks and the music industry.

I did this Mickey Dragon graphic for Disney in 2001 and they said it might be a little scary for kids.  But the funny thing is, last year I was looking through a martial arts magazine at the grocery store and came across this illustration.  They started using it for their Disney's Martial Arts Festival.  Needless to say it was surprising.  I bought the magazine and put it in the box with other print stuff.  I called the client who my friend was art directing for and we talked a little about it.  I didn't ask if he was further compensated.  I was just glad to finally see it out there.  

Art Archive 2

I did this one a few years ago as a studio artist for New Buffalo Shirt Factory.  New Buffalo is one of those companies that love art and like to put out a lot of it when the really don't need to (they get enough from clients).  Nothing original about this but I loved doing it.
