Pulp Project 2

no, no, no, no.... please.....

Ill be bringing both pulp projects to crit next month when the Hartford group meets at the Society of Illustrators.  I had some great feedback on the sketch from Vin Di Fate and Murray Tinkelman and their comments helped put it more where it needed to be.  I'm really looking forward to seeing every ones illustrations.  I hear the others are turning out fantastic.

Pulp Project 2

The second pulp project for Hartford will go something like this.  I'm going to rely much more on the drawing rather than the painting.  Ill redraw all the elements with greater value range and hit it with some rich darks.  I got some great feedback from Mr. Di Fate who suggested a tilt to make it more dynamic; those trees will get a substantial tilt. Its just what it needed.  I should knock it out this week now that the ball is rolling.

This is the style that the next Pulp project will be in.  Its different in that I'm using charcoal in the shadows on the paper, where most of the other sketches Iv done lately have been line drawings only (except for the Losman portrait) and colored and textured in Photoshop.  This one is pretty small from my Moleskine but the Pulp will be much much bigger.  Ill shoot that instead of scan it.

I went with charcoal because the last few IF illustrations Iv done are lacking value and I wanted it to pop.  After some push and pull, it should find its balance.

This guy is my friend Jeff K. who is a C/O.  Iv known him since the 4th grade and he has been my model for various projects since college.  Thanks, Jeff. 

The Plot Thickens

Little by little.  I did the wallpaper tonight for the assassin piece.  Now I must take a break from this project to do some other projects.  Still lots of time but if I want to do a second Ill have to stay on track.  Before I do that one, Ill have to edit my two papers which are 90 percent done, waiting patiently for their turn in the schedule.

Pulp Progress

My first pulp project is finishing up which will leave me enough time to do the other one.  Iv just got to finish up the walls, add the phone cord and the smoke, and of course tweak.  The rest is done.  Here is the main figure in stages.  Im working in a style that I can settle on for a while.  We will see.  I did it in Painter with my favorite brush.

Hartford Color Study

The last post reminded me of a color study I did while at Hartford with Dennis and Bunny.  Most of us were drawn to the book category and mine was the story of Kishimojin.  She is a subject Iv done a couple times before but now want to expand what Iv done into an illustrated book.  The story is already laid out but I'm going to adapt it in a U.S. environment.  She has already gone from India to Japan so I think to bring her here would work.  Six panels are laid out already but more are needed.  Originally it was going to be my thesis but now I'm not sure.

I rendered it using my favorite stock brush in Photoshop.

Ink Drawing

Here is a test for a children's book I'm working on by way of the Hartford MFA program.  I will be producing a lot of this style in the books development.  The panel direction for this is POISON.  The spider character on top of the mushroom is the spirit of poisonous plants. Drawing with ink and brush is a natural way for me to work and I look forward to exploring it more.
